If you give the chef fresh, diverse ingredients, you are likely to get a balanced dish. However, if the pantry is stocked with expired, one-note items, the outcome will be… less than appetising.
One infamous example is facial recognition technology. These systems have been shown to perform poorly when identifying individuals with darker skin tones. Why? Because the datasets used to train these algorithms are often skewed, containing fewer images of people of colour. It is not that the AI is inherently racist – it is simply working with what it has been given. The result? Technology that is supposed to be neutral ends up perpetuating existing biases, leading to potentially harmful consequences in real-world applications.

This allows for external scrutiny and helps build trust among users. If AI is the wizard behind the curtain, it is time to pull that curtain back and show what is really going on.
Lastly, there is the human element. No matter how advanced AI becomes, it should never operate in a vacuum. Human oversight is crucial to catching and correcting instances of AI bias that might slip through. This means creating diverse teams of people who understand the potential pitfalls and are committed to steering AI in the right direction.
